Dog Mating - Why Do Dogs 'Tie'

There is one thing you must never do - attempt to separate two dogs mating.  It will appear as if they are stuck together.  Commonly what happens after mating is the male will twist around so that the two animals are facing in opposite directions.  They will be tied together.  They may be whining as if they are in distress.  Don't be alarmed the animals are going through the mating process in the natural way.  If you try to separate them it may cause them injury.  Be patient and keep the dogs calm.  They will separate after about twenty to thirty minutes.

Because of the way dogs mate it is almost impossible for the bitch not to be impregnated.  When the dog mounts the bitch the penis is not erect.  The reason that penetration is possible is due to a tiny bone in the penis.  This bone is known as the baculum.  It is the baculum that keeps the penis rigid.  At the base of the penis is tissue.  Blood enters the tissue and it becomes swollen.  Essentially the penis becomes trapped inside the female dog.  This is when the tie happens.  The two dogs remain tied until ejaculation has ceased and the swollen tissue shrinks back to its normal state.

If you have never witnessed two dogs mating you can rest assured that this is quite normal.  In fact, if the tie did not occur you should be concerned.  The tie is simply nature's way of ensuring the sperm enters and stays in the vagina.  Nature doesn't leave anything to chance and gives the female the best chance to become impregnated.  There is another reason for the tie taking place.  A bitch in season will very often attract more than one male.  It is not uncommon for a bitch to have a number of dogs around her.  The tie makes sure the process of mating is not stopped by other males trying to mate with a bitch in season.

It's very important the dogs are left to separate without intervention.  If they panic and try to rip apart they probably will be hurt.  There is more chance of a dog becoming distressed during the tie period if it is a first mating experience.  The best you can do is to sit with the dog speaking in a calm low voice so that the animal remains passive and calms down as quickly as possible.

basically, i was alone in the house with my mums two rottweilers- they are a breeding pair and they tied. obviously i didnt know alot and the bitch panicked. she yelped- making a horrendous racket. she lay down when the dogs were facing in opposite directions(bum to bum), she continued to panic and yelp when i tried to calm her.. she was struggling despite me trying to hold her still.. they became untied after about 5/6 minutes when she was still wiggling around.. will she have done damage to either of the dogs or is a seperation after about 5minutes normal? they both seemed okay when i checked them over after the tie, but im no expert!

This dumb ass male dog got in our front yard and mated my sister's dog. We didn't even want our dog to become pregnate. My dad hit the male with a broom and instantly they seperated. My dad continued to hit the dog. Our yard has bars with wires and the dog ripped them and got in. This happend like at 2 in the morning. We were asleep when my dad heard our dog crying. Either way, every 8 days we have to take her to the vet so they can inject her so we can stop the pups from being born. The male was a street dog.

good work with hitting the dog with a broom - you've probably done some serious damage to that dog not to mention more damage on your sisters dog.

Well actually my dad hit it, by luck we already injected her, so it's less possible that shes pregnate now.

If you were planning on taking her to the vet to get shots so she isnt pregnant, then you shouldnt of hit the male dog with a broom, esp after he stopped. Your dad should be charged with animal abuse. even if that wasnt your dog, thats animal abuse.

I have witnessed a great deal of dogs breeding, but it was very scary to see my Mom's little female pug tie for the first time with a large shepherd mixed. It was during the night, we didn't know she was still outside, until we heard crying as if a child had injuried himself, rushing to the door, flipping on the porch light their they were, stuck together, both the small pug and the shepherd mixed, as though she was unconscience, the pug was dragged around the yard helplessly. all we could do, was sat and wait, hoping that this large male, didn't kill her physically or that it had injury her internally. later, she gave birth to two healthy pups, Wow!

O.K. you must admit, dogs thurst themselves forcefully deep into the vigina of the bitch, until their balls are flipped inside out, as deep as the dog's penis goes, it seems the balls also find its way in or near the lips of the vigina. the squeezing and twitching of the vigina plays an important role in keeping the male penis erected as well, if you look closely at the tie during mating you will see the vigina moving, throbbing periodically, the warm pleasurable vibration, sends sensation, causing penetration, while the head of the erected penis swells inside the vigina, it blocks anything from getting through, and whatever it ejaculates from coming out, once the mission is complete, the penis is still long and red from the blood that caused this large bulb in the penis to began with. O.K. get prepared, because your bitch (female dog) is about to bring home a liter of pups, ruf!
